The Death Sound - TDS: Year One

The Death Sound
The Death Sound started as a project between Alex and Matt in late summer of 2007. The canonical “birthday” of The Death Sound is August 24th, the first of three days of the Roman Mundus Patet, upon which the gate to the underworld was opened that the spirits of the sanctified dead might commune, dine, and celebrate with the living.

In trust, The Death Sound has its origins as far back as the late 90s and early 00s, when Matt was recording minimalist electronic and IDM as the Bitter Poets, and Alex was aware of Matt’s programming work (indeed, they even attended college together), but realization of TDS would be not come until late spring of 2007. The idea behind TDS was initially to bring a retro-Industrial sound to Arkansas, but it soon become clear that TDS wasn’t retro, would never be retro, and would be better off doing something new and their own.

“This collection serves to show where TDS has come over the last year, bringing you our earliest recordings and the show that marked our first anniversary, and perhaps to show where we may be going in the future.”

I could go on all day about TDS but in two words i can sum it all up PURE GENIUS…..

I saw these guys live - in person - twice and what can I say, each time they got better and better. They have a unique style that sounds fantastic, especially if you’re into industrial. They do good collaborations with a wide variety of popular, established bands. On top of their excellent original stuff, they do great covers of Throbbing Gristle and Faith No More. I would recommend them to anyone I know.

Cigarettes, Whiskey and Chip Music has got to be the best “fuck it I don’t want to do work all I want to do is chill by the stereo” song. Best wishes to you two crazy dudes!

I’ve only been exposed to the Industrial Genre for about a year now, thanks to TDS. While I prefer some of the faster, more complicated tracks, I still think my favorites are No Waking and Psychic Wave: Crest 2. Seeing them live was an experience as well, in spite of the Juggalo Uprising…heh But seriously, this first year of music has opened me up to a whole new area that I’d never even considered before, and I can honestly say I’m intrigued and pleased with the progress. I really like the idea behind the collaborations that have been in progress… but mostly, I’m excited about learning about this group when they started on the ground floor. It’s fascinating to see how a sound evolves, and I consider myself lucky that I get to watch as it unfolds! I can’t wait for more!

TDS has some GREAT sounds here. FM industrial - seriously cool minimalism and thought provoking sound textures. MY favorites off the year one project:

And the lillies - mellow evocative and thoughtful

Cigarettes, Whiskey, and Chip Music - BRILLIANT!!!

this sick feeling - shades of The dragon experience - very nice

A series of tubular bells - Oh YES

no waking - dark and moody very cool

psychic wave crest 1 - gets me right there in the zone

the scream of the soul - pure terror in the best way

Many of these songs call to mind elements of the sonic experiments of Jack Dangers Forbidden Planet and cEvin Key’s dragon experience. I great intro to TDS and their unique sound. If I were to offer any critique at all - it would be on the sound quality of the mix - but in all fairness I am a horrid stickler for that - just ask Rev.Spook - I drive him mad sometimes, and more often myself fiddling and tuning the sound quality of our things until … well … it drives me insane. So take that for what it’s worth :)

    Much respect!
